Launched in 1997, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut shocked many veteran collectors and watch enthusiasts with the release of a sporty steel case and rubber strap watch. It was the first timepiece from the classical manufacturer to be fitted on rubber, and signified a leap into a new era for the brand. The original Reference 5060 was limited to around 1000 pieces and housed in a 36mm case. A year later after the success of the original reference, the brand released Reference 5065, such as seen in the present lot. The new reference grew in size in a much more sought after 38mm “Jumbo” case.

The Aquanaut was originally designed as an entry level watch for a younger audience, but has skewed far from its intended trajectory. Today, it is one of the most favored and desirable watches from Patek Philippe. The present lot, reigns from 2005, and has a Luminova dial and hands. The watch is fitted on its original black rubber “tropical” strap, along with the steel butterfly clasp. Reference 5065 has a screw down crown and case back to ensure a water resistance rating of 120 meters, making the watch ready for any situation it comes across.
