Chosen by the owner of the Ultimate Collection with unerring taste and an eye for rarity and originality, the present rare reference 6264, a model only made for 3 years, is offered in excellent overall condition and can be considered a most beautiful and desirable example of a pump-pusher ‘Panda’ Paul Newman Cosmograph Daytona. In the world of vintage watches where a Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona is a must have, this example is a dream.
With a monochromatic black and white palette, the ‘Panda’ Paul Newman is simply superb, considered by many to be one of the most attractive dial variations to be found on a vintage Daytona - it is certainly one of the rarest and most recognizable.
The present watch has aged impeccably, the white background of the untouched dial has acquired the very lightest of patina over the course of its 50-plus years of life, the intact luminous plots have similarly aged to a pleasing patina that perfectly matches the luminous material of the hands. The case is full and crisp with sharp edges and lustrous brushed finish to the top of the lugs. This ‘Panda’ Paul Newman exemplifies the state of preservation and originality that collectors crave and provides an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire what is unquestionably one of the most appealing Paul Newman 6264’s to appear at auction recently.
Reference 6264
Amongst all of the Cosmograph Daytonas, reference 6264 is one of the rarest, considered by collectors to be a transitional model, it was in production for only three years between 1969 and 1972.
Together with reference 6262, it was the last Rolex chronograph watch featuring the simple round push-down buttons. All future Cosmograph references, starting with references 6263 and 6265, bear screw down chronograph buttons. Reference 6264 was available in stainless steel, as well as 14K and 18K gold. It has a bezel with black acrylic insert and white tachymeter graduation.
