The composition is closely related to the Capriccio of Roman ruins, signed and dated 1737 (see F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma del '700, Rome, 1986, p. 357, no. 251) in which the artist has substituted the sarcophagus and the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina respectively with the Medici Vase and the Temple of Minerva Medica.

At the time of the 2011 sale, Professor David R. Marshall confirmed the attribution following inspection of the original, regarding it as a fine example from the artist's mid-career.
