One of the rarest and most visually striking of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s mid-century vintage timepieces, the steel triple calendar moon-phase is exceedingly difficult to find with a black dial. The dial design, colours and graphics for this model are close to perfection, featuring large bold luminous Arabic numerals and outer date ring with corresponding red-tipped arrow hand, the white outer ‘railway’ minute track and inner white circle, seconds and moon phase border provide a clean and sharp framework that renders the dial a great readability and clarity. Manufactured in the immediate post-war years, although made as a ‘civilian’ timepiece, the model has a distinctly ‘military’ vibe. The elegant steel case with teardrop lugs houses the caliber 494 movement, a variation, with the addition of moon phase and calendar modules, of the famous caliber 478 used for military watches and the ‘Geophysic’.
A stunning vintage triple calendar moon phase, the present watch would be hard to beat in terms of style, impact, condition and rarity and would be a superb and wearable addition to any collection.
