Few watches elicit as much excitement today as a reference 6263 with a Paul Newman ‘Panda’ dial of exceptional quality. With a monochromatic black and white palette, the Paul Newman Panda dial is generally considered as the most beautiful ever created for a wristwatch and is regarded as being the ultimate steel vintage Cosmograph model.
Consigned by a private collector and, to the best of our knowledge, entirely fresh to the auction market, this highly attractive example is offered in very good overall condition. In the world of vintage watches where a Rolex 6263 Paul Newman is a must have, this example is an excellent representative of the iconic reference, with a very attractive and warm dial.
The present watch has aged extremely well, carefully cherished by the current owner, a private collector, who wore the wristwatch with great care for over 20 years. A perfectionist, he sent the watch for servicing at Rolex in 2003, while making sure he would keep parts when retrieving the watch from Rolex. Complementing the overall excellence of this 6263 is the stainless steel case by C.R. Spielmann S.A. The case is full and crisp with sharp edges and lustrous brushed finish to the top of the lugs. The interior of the caseback is stamped with reference number 6262.
Reference 6263
Sporting a black bezel and screw down pushers, it inherits the legacy of reference 6240, the first of the screw down pusher Daytonas, also sporting a black bezel. The similarity is obvious, the differences much less so. As a matter of fact, however, the case design of reference 6263 is slightly bigger, and the movement is the new calibre 727, whilst reference 6240 is usually fitted with the older calibre 722 (even though early examples are known with the earlier 72B calibre, and late ones with cal. 722-1). The defining feature of both references is undeniably the presence of the screw down pushers, which make the entire watch look bigger and more sporting.
