Many collectors of vintage watches hunt for the perfect example of this favourite Rolex model. For scholars and aficionados of fine and complicated vintage Rolex wristwatches, this wonderful specimen of reference 6036 ‘Jean Claude Killy’ is a dream watch. The present stainless steel example of this landmark reference can be considered very well preserved and a rare unrestored specimens.
Originally part of the fabled Gordon Bethune Collection of Fifty Exceptional Vintage Wristwatches, sold at Christie’s New York in 2012, Gordon Bethune was the former CEO of Continental Airlines 1994-2004 and a world-renowned watch collector, famed for the condition and originality of the pieces in his collection. Since its acquisition from the Gordon Bethune Collection by the present owner, it has since been part of the world’s greatest collection of important vintage wristwatches.
These ‘Dato-Compax’ triple calendar chronograph watches, in particular the later version of reference 6036, are linked to a legendary personality: Jean-Claude Killy. Olympic skier and man of extremely refined taste, the name of Mr. Killy has been associated with Rolex for 40 years since he became an official Rolex Ambassador and began serving on the Rolex Board of Directors.
Uniting rarity, history and mechanical complexity, the present timepiece is a rare opportunity for the discerning collector of the finest vintage Rolex watches to add this legendary model to his or her collection.
Reference 6036
Launched in 1950, reference 6036 was introduced as an Oyster chronograph model enhanced by a full triple-date calendar. No other Rolex model offered more complications. Available in either stainless steel, yellow gold, or pink gold, with a variety of different dial designs, reference 6036 was in production until the very early 1960s. Scholars estimate that the total production of reference 6036 cased in stainless steel to be 500 pieces, over a period of approximately 8 years between 1950 and 1958.
