19th Century European Art
Sale Overview
Leading the 19th Century European Art sale are two superb works by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Les deux soeurs and Rêverie sur le seuil. Fresh to the market, both paintings come from private American collections. The sale also offers a particularly strong selection of Barbizon works, including luminous landscapes by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, the most important single-figure painting by Léon-Augustin Lhermitte and a seminal work from Jean-François Millet’s iconic milkmaid series. Additional highlights include important works by the leading Sporting artist Sir Alfred Munnings, as well as a consummate power portrait of Adolphus Busch, the founder of Anheuser-Busch brewery, by Anders Zorn.
