20th/21st Century: Amsterdam

20th/21st Century: Amsterdam

Sale Overview

Christie’s Amsterdam is excited to present 20th/21st Century: Amsterdam, an online-only auction live for bidding from 7-21 November 2023.

20th/21st Century: Amsterdam brings together an exciting selection of works by leading international artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Jan Schoonhoven, Raimund Girke, Martin Kippenberger, Per Kirkeby, Imi Knoebel, A.R. Penck and Marlene Dumas. Furthermore, this auction will hold special significance as it marks the 75th anniversary of the groundbreaking CoBrA movement.

Seventy-five years on from its founding, we look back on the brief, furious life of a movement opposed to ‘all forms of split between free thought and the action of painting freely.’ CoBrA, with its roots in Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam, was a radical influence on a whole generation of artists. Christie’s is delighted to present a selection of works from iconic figures of this movement such as Karel Appel, Corneille, Constant, and Asger Jorn, which document the dynamism of this period of European history.

A selection of highlights will be available to view at Christie’s Amsterdam from 7- 21 November 2023.
