20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale
Sale Overview
Christie’s London will host its 20th/21st Century Evening Sale on 28 February 2023, featuring major works by some of period’s most significant artists.
Leading highlights offer contrasting visions of the female form, including Pablo Picasso’s Femme dans un rocking-chair (Jacqueline) and two masterpieces by Georg Baselitz from the Hess Art Collection. Elsewhere, themes of nature and landscape unite works by Paul Cézanne and Lucian Freud. Stories entwine across the sale: the latter’s Scillonian Beachscape, notably, was inspired by a trip to the Isles of Scilly with John Craxton, who in turn was the owner of Alberto Giacometti’s important and unique sculpture Chandelier for Peter Watson.
A rich group of German Expressionist paintings finds contemporary echoes in works by Liu Ye and Amoako Boafo; portraits by Pierre Auguste Renoir and Gustave Klimt speak to those of Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Claire Tabouret. From works by Marc Chagall and Paul Gauguin to David Hockney and Cecily Brown, the sale offers a rich opportunity to explore Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary art in dialogue.
