20th Century Evening Sale

20th Century Evening Sale

Sale Overview

Celebrating the most significant movements of the modern and post-war eras, this May’s 20th Century Evening Sale showcases the vanguard artists who defined the period. The sale is highlighted by ground-breaking champions of Abstract Expressionism, including Franz Kline and Joan Mitchell; American visionaries Georgia O’Keeffe, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud and Andy Warhol; and bolstered by renowned leaders of modernism, such as Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso and René Magritte.

The auction is led by Vincent van Gogh’s seminal masterwork, Coin de Jardin avec papillons, an abundant and colorful garden scene from 1887. The presentation of Monet’s masterful painting, Moulin de Limetz, from The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Heirs of Ethel B. Atha, represents a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, the great movement which paved the way for the birth of 20th Century Art.

We are honored to present the Collection of Norman and Lyn Lear, led by David Hockney’s iconic masterpiece, A Lawn Being Sprinkled, with other highlights including Ed Ruscha, Willem de Kooning and Ellsworth Kelly.

This season is also represented by highly esteemed collections, including the Collection of Fritz and Lucy Jewett, the Neumann Family Collection, Surrealist Dream: The Collection of Shirley and Frank Wozencraft, Property from the Collection of Mary & John Pappajohn, and the Collection of the Viennese Cabaret and Film Star Fritz Grünbaum.
