Sale Overview

Aligned with Christie’s 20th/21st Century Week in New York, the American Art department is thrilled to present a curated auction of 20th-century American paintings, works on paper and sculpture on 17 May. Property from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston includes Georgia O’Keeffe’s superb Abiquiu Trees VII, which will follow Christie’s sale of the Museum’s A Sunflower from Maggie in the 20th Century Evening Sale on 12 May.  O’Keeffe’s seminal watercolor Abstraction joins a rare largescale pastel abstraction by Arthur Dove from the same important private collection.  Other prominent American Modernists represented in the auction include Milton Avery, Charles Burchfield, Gaston Lachaise, Elie Nadelman and Jacob Lawrence.  Bridging genres, Property from the May Family Collection features Thomas Hart Benton’s striking Regionalist composition Gateside Conversation and exceptional Impressionist works by Frederick Frieseke and Frank Weston Benson, including the latter’s plein-air masterpiece The Hilltop.  Further highlights include Childe Hassam’s jewel-like Flower Girl from the Collection of Robert and Virginia Payne and important Ashcan School works by William Glackens, John Sloan and Robert Henri. Finally, Illustration offerings are headlined by Norman Rockwell’s charming Home From Camp and a variety of examples by N.C. Wyeth.
