Antiquities

The 12 April Antiquities sale features an impressive selection of works from across the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. The objects represent ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Egyptian and Near Eastern cultures range in date from the 4th millennium B.C. to the 10th century A.D. 

The top lot of the sale is a superb Egyptian Bronze Cat, formerly in the collection of R. Sturgis Ingersoll (1891-1973), the former president of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Antiquities is also honored to offer an important Sasanian Sardonyx Cameo with a Royal Portrait Bust of King Narseh, reign 295-303 A.D. This exceptional cameo, a recent rediscovery, is only one of approximately fifty Sasanian examples known and has early provenance: it is thought to have been collected by Jean-Pierre Collot (1774-1852), the French financier and close associate of Napoleon Bonaparte. 

Other highlights include an impressive group of Greek and Roman helmets from a Distinguished Private Collection; this group is led by a Roman Tinned Copper Cavalry Parade Helmet once in the collection of Axel Guttmann. We are also pleased to feature a stunning Egyptian Electrum Finger Ring from the late 18th Dynasty, a Roman Marble Silvanus formerly in the collection of Ernest Brummer, and an important Sasanian Parcel Gilt Silver Dish featured in Oleg Grabar’s landmark 1967 exhibition, Sasanian Silver.
