Art Impressionniste et Moderne

Sale Overview

Five masterpieces from the collection of the poet and art critic Jacques Dupin will be offered for sale, including an important painting on plastic by Joan Miró, which demonstrates his fondness for experimenting with unusual media. Alberto Giacometti will be represented by two works which exemplify the artist’s research into the depiction of the individual in space: Tête noire, a painting from 1958 and Femme debout, a 30 cm. high bronze, characteristically slender and with a strong presence. The sale will also present an early gouache by André Derain, Trois baigneuses, dated from 1906, which illustrates Fauvism in all its splendour. In the manner of previous seasons, the sale will include important sculptures, among them Homme à la barbe ou Portrait de Monsieur Janès, made of copper patinated leaves, cut, hammered, assembled and welded by Pablo Gargallo, and an iconic bronze by Auguste Rodin, Le Baiser, in its original format known as ‘taille de la porte [de l’Enfer]’, in reference to the ‘gate of Hell’ in which it was originally intended to be incorporated.
