Cornelia Svedman, Head of Sale, Impressionist and Modern Works on Paper: “This sale welcomed buyers from across 5 continents, with new bidders active throughout. There was a notable strength of demand for German and Austrian works, led by a collection of Emile Nolde watercolours (lot 201-210) which sparked competitive bidding from international collectors and realised £1.8 million, far exceeding their collective pre-sale estimate. We are very pleased to have set a new record price at auction for a work on paper by Oskar Kokschka, with ‘Tochter des Gauklers’ fetching £265,250. We now look forward to the South Kensington sale on 8 February.”
