Sale Overview
Headlining the inaugural January Modern British Day Sale is an impressive group of British Modernism, led by Ben Nicholson’s aug 58 (2 circles & green), Barbara Hepworth’s Torso III (Galatea) and two reclining female figure sculptures by Henry Moore. Further highlights include works by School of London artists Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff and R.B. Kitaj. British Pop Art is well represented with a rare early sculpture by Peter Blake, alongside works by Antony Donaldson, David Hockney, Allen Jones and Patrick Caulfield. We are pleased to present a seminal early painting by Frank Bowling, an important 1960s Op Art painting by Peter Sedgley and a striking painted sculpture by Anthony Caro. Leading British sculptors also feature in the sale, with works from the Geometry of Fear artists Kenneth Armitage, Bernard Meadows and Eduardo Paolozzi, and a strong selection of sculptures by Elisabeth Frink. These are offered alongside esteemed works from the renowned private collections of Jeremy Lancaster; and The late Lord and Lady John Cholmondeley.
