Sale Overview
The June sale presents circa 200 lots of important Buddhist sculptures, jade carvings, classical and modern Chinese paintings, porcelain, furniture, cloisonné enamels and lacquer. Highlights include a rare bronze figure of Ksitigarbha from the Dali Kingdom (937-1253), from a private Danish collection, a large silver and copper-inlaid bronze figure of Vajradhara, Tibet, Tsang atelier, 15th century, from a private Dutch collection and a gilt-lacquered bronze figure of Maitreya from the Ming Dynasty previously in a private Swiss collection. From the Qing Dynasty, the sale will offer a rare ‘crab-shell’-glazed melon-shaped vase from the Yongzheng reign and a massive celadon and grey jade carving a recumbent horse and a monumental pair of bronze ‘deer’ censers with imperial Qianlong marks, all from French private collections. Furniture section includes a pair of beautiful huanghuali horseshoe armchairs from the Ming Dynasty amongst other important huanghuali pieces of furniture. Two modern Chinese paintings by Qi Baishi and Liu Haisu will be offered in June sale. In the Chinese Export section, we will present a very rare and important Chinese school painting from the 19th century showing the ‘Pearl river off Honam island’ in Canton. This season, we are also very proud to present for the first time in Paris a very rare ‘Great wave’ by Hokusai from a French private collection. The sale will also present an important collection of Vietnamese lacquer panels by artist Pham Hau (1903-1995), collected by Maurice Colin (1906-1994) in Vietnam between 1948 and 1954, thence by descent in the same family.
