Important Americana is the cornerstone of Christie’s Americana Week. Displaying the height of colonial craftsmanship, the furniture offerings include the magnificent ‘Deshler Family’ and two ‘John Dickinson’ Chippendale carved mahogany side chairs, a bombé chest of drawers from Marblehead, a ‘Lighthouse’ timepiece by Simon Willard of Roxbury, MA and the historically important ‘Edward Killeran’ Federal tall-case clock. The robust presidential section includes exceptional portraits of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart and Rembrandt Peale, and Alexander Hamilton’s pistols from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The folk art offerings include includes weathervanes and cigar store figures, including a racetrack tout tobacconist figure. Highlights from the New England portrait section include works by Ammi Phillips, Ralph Earl, Rembrandt Peale, William Matthew Prior and an exceptional Joshua Johnson of a mother and child. This season’s American silver selection represents works from four important private collections and dating from the late 16th century through the 20th century. The silver session will also include a number of works by Tiffany & Co. and Gorham Mfg. as well as a significant collection of American colonial tankards. The Chinese export works of art are led by a group of forty items from the Estate of Marvin Davidson including a very rare pair of dragon-carp tureens and stands, a figure group of Europeans formerly in the famed Mottahedeh collection, an ‘erotic’ pedicure group and armorial wares, including a plate from the Okeover service.
