Ancient Greek Vases from the Zimmermann Collection

Sale Overview

On 9 April, Christie’s is pleased to present Ancient Greek Vases from the Zimmermann Collection, the finest and most comprehensive selection of Athenian black- and red-figured pottery to appear at auction in decades. Diligently curated by Dr. Manfred Zimmermann (1935-2011) over the course of nearly 40 years, the collection was exhibited at his private museum, the Antikenmuseum im Schnoor, in Bremen, Germany, from 2005-2018 and later at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg from 2018-2023.

Highlights include an Attic Red-Figured Neck-Amphora, attributed to the Nausicaa Painter, formerly in the famed collection at Castle Ashby; an Attic Black-Figured Hydria, attributed to the Group of Vatican 424, once in the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute Museum of Art; and an Attic Red-Figured Lekythos, attributed to the Manner of the Berlin Painter.
