South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art

Sale Overview

Christie's is pleased to announce the Fall sale of South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art, taking place on 17 September.  The sale will present a rich collection of modernist and contemporary works spanning the region. Featured modernists include Tyeb Mehta, Maqbool Fida Husain, Akbar Padamsee, Sadequain and Francis Newton Souza. Highlighting the sale is a masterpiece by Syed Haider Raza, a founding member of the revolutionary Bombay Progressive Artists' group formed in the year of India's Independence. Painted in 1953, after moving to Paris, Italian Village is an austere geometric landscape that epitomizes the influence of European art on Raza during the 1950s. Reflecting the diversity of the region, the sale also features a collection of works by modern Sri Lankan masters who formed the ’43 Group; George Keyt, George Claessen and Ivan Peries. Several iconic works by the most recognized contemporary artists of the region – Subodh Gupta, Jitish Kallat, Bharti Kher, Shahzia Sikander and Zarina are included in the sale demonstrating the internationalism of this collecting category.
