“The auctions saw collectors vie for top quality paintings by the leading figures in the world of Chinese paintings. Classical calligraphy performed particularly well with the top selling lots achieving well above their estimates. Qian Weicheng’s ‘River Landscapes’ sold for multiples of its estimate, as did ‘Calligraphy in Running Cursive Script’ by Emperor Qianlong. Chinese modern paintings featuring important private collections sourced from around the world attracted highly competitive bidding; in particular, Xu Beihong’s ‘Two Condors’, Zhang Daqian’s ‘Lotus Pond’ and ‘Living in the Mountains’, Wu Guanzhong’s ‘Pine Soul’ and Fu Baoshi’s ‘Dreaming of Chateau de Montlys’. The Feng Wen Tang Collection of Chinese Paintings representing three decades of passionate collecting, was over 90% sold by lot and showcased 25 works from across Qi Baishi’s artistic career,” said Ben Kong, International Director of Christie’s Chinese Painting Department.
