Christie’s will present exceptional designs of 20th and 21st century artists and architects in our twice annual auction Design. Early highlights from the turn-of-the-century include Viennese Secessionist masterworks by Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann, Property from the Collection of Hida Takayama Museum of Art. These important works will be presented alongside spectacular British Arts and Crafts carpet designed by C. F. Voysey and highly important designs by Frank Lloyd Wright for historically significant commissions such as the Francis W. Little House (1902) and Avery Coonley House (1908), formerly in the collection of Barbra Streisand. 

French Art Deco is represented by carpet designs by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann and unique Ivan da Silva Bruhns carpets commission for Ambassador Gonzalo and Isabel Rosales de Zaldumbide, a rare circular table by Armand Albert Rateau, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau and Paul-Dupre Lafon. Post-war icons of French Modernism include a rare desk and chair by Charlotte Perriand, rare Jean Prouve banquette and survey of chair designs, and stylish design by Jean Royère. Three exceptional designs by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi round out the sale, including a celebrated Chess table from 1944. 

Italian design of the second half of the 20th century is represented by works from Gio Ponti’s important commission Villa Arreaza and his own at Via Dezza in Milan, showcased amongst Property from an Important American Collection which includes seminal works by Piero Fornasetti, the ‘Architettura’ series, and rare Fausto Melotti ceramics from the 1950s. Finally, a beloved Gabriella Crespi ‘Z’ desk, Property from a Hamptons Private Collection, will be offered alongside early works by Ettore Sottsass from the 1950s. 

Modern masters Les Lalanne, with a ‘Banc crocodiles’, Harry Bertoia’s ‘Untitled ‘Dandelion’’, Maria Pergay’s ‘Flying Carpet Daybed’, and several designs by Wendell Castle represent important art and design of the second half of the 20th century.
