Dessins anciens et du XIXe siècle

Sale Overview

Coinciding with the annual Salon du Dessin, Christie’s Paris invites collectors visiting the capital to explore some one hundred Old Master and 19th-century drawings, to be offered in our upcoming sale. On view are three large sheets by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, part of his celebrated Illustrated Bible series; a powerful red-and-white chalk by his father, Giovanni Battista; and a Design for a Tomb by the Raphael pupil Polidoro da Caravaggio.

Our upcoming sale also includes a wide range of 18th-century French drawings from private collections. Among the standouts are two studies of female nudes by François Boucher and Jean-Baptiste Greuze, and Charles Natoire’s watercolour view of the Aldobrandini garden near Rome.

Three Greek views by Louis-François Cassas open the 19th-century section, which also features the work of several Italian artists. Among the top lots are Boldini’s Portrait of a Pianist; Mosè Bianchi’s two-meter-high Pietà; among the works by French artists should be noted Honoré Daumier’s A lawyer in court, and Jean-François Millet’s Shepherdess in delicate pastel.
