From Pictorialism into Modernism: 80 Years of Photography features works by seminal photographers including Ilse Bing, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Dorothea Lange, Gertrude Käsebier and Edward Steichen, among others. All photographs come originally from the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The photographers represented here have made extraordinary contributions to the canon of Modern art while playing substantial roles in the early formation and evolution of the Museum’s distinguished Department of Photography. Many of the prints included in this sale were made in preparation for historic exhibitions at the Museum including The Bitter Years: 1935-1941 (1962); Dorothea Lange (1966); and Cartier-Bresson: Recent Photographs (1968).
