The excellent results demonstrate the strength of the market for a breadth of young artists such as Alex Israel, whose Sky Backdrop achieved 5 times its estimate when it sold for $1,025,000 in the artist’s first appearance at auction. Contemporary masters also saw strong demand with fierce competition from a largely international collector base. Martin Kippenberger’s Untitled was sold for the world record price of $18,645,000, after 6 minutes of bidding from in the room and on the phone. The sale witnessed worldwide participation, which demonstrated the globalized demand for this category, with 350 registrants representing 26 countries.
