Sale Overview

Impressionist & Modern Art Day and Works on Paper Sales achieved $39,966,625/ £23,580,309/ €28,775,970.

David Kleiweg de Zwaan, Head of the Works on Paper Sale, noted, “We are delighted with the results of the Day and Works on Paper sales. Bidders flocked to works from the season’s leading collections: among the top lots in the Works on Paper sale were an outstanding example of Paul Cézanne’s late style, Rochers à Bibémus, from the collection of the former director of the National Gallery of Art, J. Carter Brown, which realized $725,000, and a beautiful Marc Chagall watercolor depicting an Aesop fable from the Estate of Edgar M. Bronfman.”  Maxwell Carter, Head of the Day Sale, commented, “International interest drove strong results in the auction, the highest-grossing Day Sale at Christie’s, New York since 2007.  Four works sold in excess of $1 million, including Picasso’s wartime painting Buste de Femme, which more than doubled its estimate, netting $2,741,000, and Kees van Dongen’s Fillette au bois, from the Estate of Edgar M. Bronfman, which went for $1,925,000, matching the result for an early Van Gogh landscape, Oude Toren bij Zonsondergang. We look forward to the upcoming Impressionist and Modern Art sales in London in June and New York in November for which exciting property has already been secured.”
