Sale Overview

Christie’s American Art department is thrilled to present its inaugural sale of Modern American Art—a curated auction of 20th-century American paintings, works on paper and sculpture on 21 April. Major works include Milton Avery’s 1944 figural seascape, Woman by the Sea as well as Edward Hopper’s captivating 1942 watercolor, Four Dead Trees. Property from the Morton and Norma Lee Funger Collection includes a rare John Sloan painting of New York and an enthralling Charles Burchfield watercolor, Haunted Twilight, while Property from a Private American Collection features important paintings by Stuart Davis and John Marin.  Christie’s is also honored to present a special group of Western Modernism from the Phillips Family Collection, featuring Nicolai Fechin’s Cesarita in Violet and Robert Henri’s Juanita. Other prominent Modernists in the sale include Georgia O’Keeffe, Thomas Hart Benton, Jacob Lawrence, George Tooker, Fairfield Porter and Jamie Wyeth.

The auction will immediately follow Modern American Masterworks from the Ted Shen Collection on 21 April 2023.
