Old Master & British Drawings
Sale Overview
Christie’s Old Master & British Drawings sale features a wide selection of works from the 16th to the 19th Centuries by Italian, Northern, French and British artists. Headlining the sale is a newly discovered and sensitive portrait by Anthony Van Dyck of the engraver Willem Hondius, preparatory for one of the prints in the series known as the Iconographie. Additional highlights in the sale are a rare double-sided large sheet by Francesco Salviati in pen and ink, and drawings by the likes of Parmigianino and Guercino. French drawings include one of Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s illustrations for Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando furioso, a powerful male academy by François Boucher, and a truly monumental architectural capriccio by Hubert Robert. Two watercolors by Joseph Mallord William Turner – Plymouth Citadel, a gale and Cologne from the river – are among the highlights of the British drawings and watercolors section.
