Old Master Paintings & Sculpture
Sale Overview
Christie's presents Old Master Paintings & Sculpture online, featuring over 100 lots of Western art spanning 500 years from the medieval era to neoclassicism. The sale commences with a group of works of the Italian Renaissance from a European private collection and a series of Tudor portraits formerly with the Dukes of Manchester at Kimbolton Castle, including early depictions of Philip II and Charles V of Spain and Henry VIII’s chancellor Thomas Cromwell. Highlights of the sale from the Dutch Golden Age include major works by David Vinckboons, Salomon van Ruysdael and Simon Luttichuys. The eighteenth and nineteenth century is represented by view paintings by Francesco Zuccarelli and Giovanni Paolo Panini (£40,000-60,000 for the pair), a topographical accurate view of Nuremberg in 1734 by Samuel Friedrich Schmeider and a charismatic Study of a Tree by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (£10,000-15,000).
The Sculpture & Works of Art section includes works from the 15th to the early 19th centuries. Among them is a newly discovered bronze by Antonio Susini (£25-35,000), as well as a small collection of early bronzes from a deceased estate which includes a table top fountain group of Venus and Cupid on dolphins from the workshop of Francesco Fanelli (£1,000-1,500). Later works of art include a beautifully executed terracotta portrait relief of a lady by Francois-Marie Poncet dated 1775 (£25-35,000) and a group of marble and terracotta works by the English neo-classical sculptor Joseph Gott.
