Old Masters

Sale Overview

Featuring paintings by some of the most esteemed artists in history, this January, Christie’s is pleased to present our biannual Old Masters sale in New York. Headlining the sale are Francesco Goya’s captivating portraits of María Vicenta Barruso Valdés and her mother Leonora Antonia Valdés de Barruso. Additional highlights include a beautifully preserved landscape on copper by Jan Brueghel I, a pair of life-size, full-length portraits depicting two of the children of the Elector of Saxony by Lucas Cranach II, Jean-Antoine Watteau’s recently rediscovered Le Pèlerinage a l’Ile de Cythère and two iconic compositions by Pieter Brueghel II – The Kermesse of Saint George and The Bird Trap. A wonderful selection of view paintings is headlined by Canaletto’s striking view of the Rialto Bridge from The Paul G. Allen Collection, while British art is well-represented through exemplary works like Joseph Mallord William Turner’s early Pope’s Villa at Twickenham
