Sale Overview

Jennifer Yum, Head of Day Sale (Part II) declared: “Strong results were achieved today with a total of $66 million, freshness to the market is key and an asset that drew in buyers of works from collections and estates. The sale was offering the second part of the collection of Ileana Sonnabend and the Estate of Nina Castelli Sundell which totaled $21.8 million, with 100% of the lots sold. Among the 68 lots offered in the day sale, 5 were hammered above the million $. The grand total for the collection achieved $82 million, far above the pre-sale estimate. The sale ended with very strong results for works on paper by Alexander Calder (lots 601-604, 615-621) all sold several times over their pre-sale estimate. Strong prices were achieved by women artists such as Joan Mitchell and Ruth Asawa as part of the top ten prices sold in today’s auction. There was predominant buying from private collectors from all over the world: the Americas, Europe, and Asia in particular.”
