The Surrealist World of Rosalind Gersten Jacobs and Melvin Jacobs

This May, Christie’s is honored to present The Surrealist World of Rosalind Gersten Jacobs and Melvin Jacobs. Born from the Jacobs’ personal bonds with the artists and a deep love of art, this collection showcases works created by moments of spontaneous inspiration and creative collaboration, embodying the spirit of the Dada and Surrealist movements. Rosalind Gersten Jacobs, an American fashion buyer and retail executive, was first introduced to Surrealism in 1954 by gallerist, patron and artist, William Copley, and his wife, Noma. Through the Copleys, Rosalind and Melvin Jacobs met Man Ray, and this fateful meeting would mark not only the beginning of their lifelong journey of collecting, but would chart them on a new path of artistic discovery and launch several close-knit friendships with artists.

The collection spans all media and features paintings, photographs, drawings, sculptures prints and jewelry by leading artists of the 20th century, including Man Ray, René Magritte, Marcel Duchamp, Dorothea Tanning, Vija Celmins and Salvador Dalí.  An additional group of works from the Jacobs collection will be sold in an accompanying Online Sale.
