Lot Essay

The Chester Roodee racecourse has claim to be the oldest in Britain, with records dating back to 1540, the name Roodee deriving from Roode Eye, the Cross ('rood' in Anglo-Saxon) which stood there. The course itself is round and just over a mile long set against a panorama of the Welsh hills.
