Lot Essay

It is known that Peter Simple, the Grand National winner of 28th February 1849, ran in the Wakefield Steeplechase of the 21st February, although it was only a week before Liverpool.
The 1849 National saw a particularly bad chapter of incidents, with three horses killed, and two major pile-ups at narrow 18 inch banks, as depicted in the latter work. Peter Simple does not however appear to feature in either of the present works.

It is likely that the incident Alken has chosen to depict in the latter work is of the fall of a horse named Equinox, bringing down several others in a resulting mêlée.
