Lot Essay

Old Joe was bred in 1879 by Mr Banks of High Moor, Wigton, and got by Barefoot dam Spot, by Chevalier. Between 1884 and 1886 he won eleven high profile races including the Grand National in 1886.

The present picture depicts a betting commissioner taking down bets in his betting book and advising a Mr Douglas, while the jockey, Mr Skelton, appears to listen attentively - the jockeys were themselves able to bet at this time.
