In 1899, Munnings lost the sight in his right eye and was not allowed to use his good eye for many months. Having been paying medical and nursing expenses, his savings had dwindled to nothing. As a result of this, he started working for the lithography firm Page Bros. & Co. Ltd., of Norwich, producing commercial work for local companies to augment his finances. One of the commissions was poster designs for Caley's chocolates. It is very likely that the present work is a pencil sketch executed at this time.
