MARK OF JOHN ELSTON, EXETER, 1718
Tapering cylindrical and on a moulded foot, the high domed cover with a baluster finial and a scroll thumbpiece, with a carved wood handle, engraved with a coat-of-arms, the base engraved with initials 'J*L' and the date 'July Ye 20th 1718', marked under base and on cover bezel

gross weight 25 oz. (773 gr.)
The arms are those of Lavington for the Rev. John Lavington of Exeter (c.1690-1759). Lavington married Bridget (d.1729), daughter of John Ball a minister at Honiton, in 1713. They had a number of children including a daughter Jane, who was bapised on 30 July 1718 at the Bow Meeting House in Exeter. It is possible the inscription relates to her birth.
