drypoint, circa 1889, on laid paper with Van Gelder coat of arms watermark, Breeskin's first state (of two), signed in pencil, annotated 'état,' with margins (deckle along two sides), surface soiling, pale lines of green staining at the mother's shoulder and at the lower left of her skirt, a faint ¾-in. black scuff above the mother's head, occasional printing and handling creases, the R. Hartshorne inkstamp at the reverse of the lower right image corner (slightly showing through), stray black ink in places (primarily in the margins), a 1-in. tear at the upper left margin corner, staining above the platemark in the upper margin, pale time staining along the right edge, otherwise in good condition
