En métal doré et ébène, figurant un chien allongé finement ciselé, ses yeux bougeant au rythme de l'échappement, sa machoire et sa queue bougeant lorsque l'horloge sonne, la partie supérieure de la base dorée d'un cadran gravé de chiffres romains à aiguille unique en acier, la base quadrangulaire décorée de volutes, le mouvement poinçonné "AM/W" dans un écusson, restaurations

A SOUTH GERMAN GILT-METAL AND EBONY STRIKING AND AUTOMATON FIGURAL CLOCK
AMW, PROBABLY AUGSBURG, SECOND QUARTER 17th CENTURY
Modelled with a recumbent chased gilt-metal dog, its eyes moving to the beat of the escapement and its jaw and tail moving when the clock strikes, resting on a gilt-metal platform inset with an engraved Roman dial with single steel hand, above an ebony plinth applied with gilt-metal conjoined scroll mounts, with ring-turned columns to the angles and resting on four gilt-metal bun feet; the movement with rectangular plates secured with four square steel pillars held with gilt-metal nuts, gut fusee for the going train and fixed barrel for the strike train, verge and steel balance escapement, unpierced countwheel for strike on bell with faceted hammer, the back plate engraved with two lines to its border, steel clicks to the going train set up and conforming spring to the strike hammer, the back plate stamped "AM/W" within a shield; restorations

An automaton dog table clock of related design, by the maker IF, was sold Sotheby's New York, Masterpieces from the Time Museum, Part IV, Vol I, 13 October 2004, lot 516. A table clock stamped by the unknown maker "AMW" and dating from the later part of the 16th Century is in the Collection of the British Museum.
