A DERUTA GOLD-LUSTRE BELLA DONNA CHARGER
CIRCA 1500-1530
Painted in blue and enriched in gold lustre with a bust-length portrait of a young woman against a scrolling ribbon inscribed CHI/BE GUI/DA SUA BARCHA E SENPRE IN/OR/TO below a narrow scale-pattern band, the border decorated with foliate panels and panels of scale ornament a quartieri (retouching to her cheek, upper arm, chest and three small areas of the border at 7, 8 and 10 o'clock, shallow chip to obverse of rim at 10 o'clock, chip to underside of rim at 12 o'clock, slight glaze flaking to rim)

A closely related example is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, see Rackham, Catalogue of Italian Maiolica (London, 1940), Vol. II, pl. 75, no. 479, where the young lady is facing to the right. A similar example was sold in these Rooms on 22 April 2008, lot 11.
