This work by Nicolas de Stael, dating from 1947 combines all main characteristics of works painted by the artist during this period. The domination of vertical, oblique ochre lines, which form a highly intense network. Colored tints of whites and blues, ochre and brick, rise out of the thick paste... The material's striking depth emerges suddenly from a movement. The eye experiences emotion and sensual pleasure as it takes in these accumulated layers of paint, so granular and streaky. Delicate tones of iris greys and a subtle range of greens pulsate behind the dark bars of the grill in the foreground. Sticks and batons flee, tumbling over each other and are lost like in a game, reminiscent of the construction of stained glass.
