Xu Beihong had a difficult time in his early life, and he often had to turn to friends for financial help. As a result, he valued his friendships very much and as a sign of gratitude, he dedicated many of his paintings to his friends, such as Lot 665 to Huaisun, Lot 669 to Bingqi, and this current Lot, to Liqing. Although these names may not appear in history books, these were the people who helped Xu solidify his name as an artist and enabled him to continue practicing his craft until he found fame.
