Note:
With its upturned nose and proper proportions of the body, face, legs and tail, Boar displays Xu's skill in employing compound brushstrokes, by overlaying darker tones over lighter ones, drier over wetter, Xu created rich textures and a stronger sense of a tactile surface of the boar, without firm outlines to diminish its aesthetic quality, further strengthening the portrayal of a dynamic and life-like boar. Though simple in composition, there is more to its beauty than merely balance and proportion - there is also history, skill and above all, ingenuity.
