Lot Essay

The present work is of the same composition as the painting from a French private collection that was exhibited in Naples at the Museo di Capodimonte, Salvator Rosa: tra mito e magia, 18 April-29 June 2008, no. 77, and may relate to the smaller painting of the same subject by Rosa (Paris, Louvre) and its copy (Oxford, Christ Church).
