Published with omissions as part of A Journal kept in Turkey and Greece, 1859. One of a series of journals in which this influential economist records his tours of Europe and the Levant and his conversations with leading statesmen. Therapia (modern Tarabya) is on the European shores of the Bosphorus just outside Istanbul: the journal includes conversations on life and sociological conditions in Turkey with Lord Stratford de Redcliffe, Achmed Vefic Effendi (the Turkish minister of justice), Reschid Pasha, Ismail Pasha, Edouard Thouvenal and others.
