SENIOR, Nassau William (1790-1864). Copy journal signed (at end, 'Nassau W. Senior'), title in autograph 'Therapia. Sepr & Octr 1857', describing a journey to the environs of Istanbul, 13 August - 29 October 1857, illustrated with three contemporary photographs (one signed by Robertson & Beato), 273 x 215mm, depicting an unidentified Ottoman building, the Sultan Achmet mosque and Hagia Sophia, also 14 topographical engravings, autograph limitation note signed with initials below title ('It is requested that no part of this journal be copied'), approximately 168 pages, 4to, contemporary calf gilt (rubbed).
Published with omissions as part of A Journal kept in Turkey and Greece, 1859. One of a series of journals in which this influential economist records his tours of Europe and the Levant and his conversations with leading statesmen. Therapia (modern Tarabya) is on the European shores of the Bosphorus just outside Istanbul: the journal includes conversations on life and sociological conditions in Turkey with Lord Stratford de Redcliffe, Achmed Vefic Effendi (the Turkish minister of justice), Reschid Pasha, Ismail Pasha, Edouard Thouvenal and others.
