SENIOR, Nassau William (1790-1864). Copy journal signed (at end, 'Nassau W. Senior'), titled in autograph 'Athens 1857 & 1858', 18 November 1857 - 15 January 1858, illustrated with a contemporary photograph of the royal palace [now the parliament] in Athens (165 x 240mm) and 7 topographical engravings, occasional emendations and insertions in autograph, autograph limitation note signed with initials under title ('It is requested that no part of this journal be copied'), approximately 164 leaves, 4to, contemporary calf gilt.
Published, with omissions, as part of A Journal Kept in Turkey & Greece, 1859. One of a series of journals in which this influential economist records his tours of Europe and the Levant and his conversations with leading statesmen. The present journal describes the antiquities and current state of Athens (which had been chosen as capital of the newly-independent Greece in 1834), and records Senior's conversations with Alexandros Mavrokordatos, King Otto and others.
