Count Alexander von Benckendorff (1849-1917) was a Russian diplomat, who served as Ambassador to Denmark and the United Kingdom. He served at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1868. Having fulfilled diplomatic duties in Italy (1869-1876), Vienna (1886-1897) and Denmark (1897-1903), Alexander Benckendorff was appointed Ambassador Extraordinaire to the Court of St James's in 1903. Benckendorff's main achievement was to strengthen Anglo-Russian relations by arranging the Anglo-Russian Entente in 1907 - an alignment which led to the creation of the Triple Entente.
