Lot Essay

Weston's portrait of his son Brett was intended as a gift for Brett's first wife, Elinore and, indeed, is inscribed to her. However, it was given instead to Flora Chandler Weston, Brett's mother, who then gifted it to her niece (and Brett's first cousin) Gladys Chandler Peckham. Gladys left the print in her will to her son Charles Bolt.
The photograph is one of many photographs in the copyrighted Charles & Mary Bolt Trust Collection of Photographs. This print, signed by both Edward and Brett, is believed to be unique.
