Lot Essay
Let Me Come Out #201 (Lot 315) is a prime display of Christine Ay Tjoe's strong technique in drypoint etching, showing a figure fighting for a release, as it emerges victoriously from the confine of the earth. Her mastery of anatomy is also clearly displayed in this and Red Execution #5 & Threesome #8 (Lot 317). Made from pieces of cloth, threads and metal cords, and sculptural in nature, Threesome #8, however eschews the traditional form of sculpture and places emphasis on lines, textures and space instead. The figures in Threesome #8 illustrate Ay Tjoe's bold approach to figuration. Red Execution #5, part of the Eksekusi Ego (Execution of the Ego) series, brings forth the message that individuals within society must bury their ego to integrate within society.
