Born Forte Wayne, Indiana, 1941. Studied mathematics and physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, WI, 1960-64 and completed an MFA at the University of California, Davis, CA, 1964-66, achieved an Honorary doctor of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, 1989. Solo exhibitions include: Leo Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 1988; Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre de Georges Pompidou, Paris, 1997; Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2010. Group exhibitions include: Moving Pictures, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, 2002; Color Chart: Reinventing Color, 1950 to Today, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2008; Move: Art And Dance Since 1960s, National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Gwacheon, 2013. Taught at San Francisco Art Institute, CA, 1966-68 and was awarded several prizes including the Beaux-Arts Magazine Art Awards: Best International Artist, Paris, 2004. He lives in New Mexico.
