Born National City, California, 1931. Studied at San Diego State University and did Post-graduate work at Otis Art Institute, Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts), and the University of California Berkeley. Solo exhibitions include: Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 1978; Cirrus Gallery, Los Angeles, California, 1988; Museo d'Arte Moderna Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, Trento, Italy, 2001; Tate Modern, London, 2009-2010; Marian Goodman Gallery, New York, 2012. Group exhibitions include: The Shape of Things to Come: New Sculpture, Saatchi Gallery, London, 2011; LA Existancial, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Los Angeles, 2013; Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2013. He taught at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA, 1970 - 1988 and the University of California, Los Angeles, 1996 - 2007. Winner of several awards including Lifetime Achievement Award, Americans for the Arts, New York, 2005; and Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, 53rd Venice Biennale, 2009. He lives in Santa Monica, California.
